About Signapse

Signapse is a fast-growing funded startup that is using deep learning to build automatic sign language translation. Our technology is grounded in world-leading AI research developed at the University of Surrey with a focus on photo-realistic video generation and machine translation. Our AI video solution is currently shown in transport hubs across the UK and USA, and we also have website and video translation tools that translate into BSL and ASL.


Signapse is growing its translation team, and is now recruiting for Deaf Sign Language Translators to join the team. We offer a fully remote working environment, equipment, time off for training and excellent mentorship and support. 

Job Requirements 

You will be:

  • Registered Sign Language Translator (RSLT) status or on track to achieve in the next cohort (TSLT). This will be with NRCPD that ensures translators are trained and competent.  

  • Knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture and Sign Language. You will be a part of the Deaf Community (or an ally) and understand the importance of sign language in the Community. 

  • Keen to learn and follow processes. For example, we have a translation process and we need everyone, staff and freelancers to be following this. 

  • Committed to first-class quality sign language production. This is a 100% requirement, and you will need to know what your limits are as well as when to say “this is too difficult”.

  • Knowledge of how technical tools can be used to speed up sign language production. For example, we only handle text when it is in our Data Collection System, so you will need to learn how to use this system, work from it and upload the finished translation back.

  • Able to handle large amounts of data in an accurate and organised manner. Sometimes, when we are given large translation data, it will need organising and you will need to be able to do this - or know when to use the skills of the wider team.

Personal Requirements

  • Fluent or Native BSL user

  • Great communicator and team player 

  • Self-starter

  • Be able to focus and work at speed when fully trained

  • Clean enhanced DBS check  

Example Responsibilities

Support the Translation team to satisfy our clients’ needs. You will do this by:  

  • Understanding client’s requirements in terms of sign language production and video editing and design. 

  • Being part of a team that recruits, engages, trains and supports Deaf interpreters and translators and organisations that work with pools of Deaf interpreters/translators.

  • Translate sign language inputs - this will be from word, audio, SRT or subtitles format into BSL.

  • Support the creation of a dataset of sign language sentences by annotating translations in our Data Collection System.

  • Communicating clearly with all team members - collaborating smoothly and effectively.  This will ensure that translations are executed with elegant, simple and efficient processes.

This is a full-time position (37.5 hours) with normal virtual office hours of 9am to 6pm (based on local time zone), although flexibility is offered to suit reasonable personal circumstances. What matters most to us is strong collaboration, meeting agreed milestones and the delivery of high quality work. In the first instance, this is a 3-month post, dependent on probation.
