About Signapse

Signapse is a fast-growing funded startup that is using deep learning to build automatic sign language translation. Our technology is grounded in world-leading AI research developed at the University of Surrey with a focus on photo-realistic video generation and NMT. Our AI translation solution is currently shown in transport hubs across the UK and USA, with a wider-domain translation product soon to be released.

Signapse is growing its technical team, and is now recruiting for an NLP Engineer. This role will improve our solution that translates between English text sentences and written British Sign Language sequences. This will be using both closed- and open-source LLMs and fine-tuning on proprietary translation data collected by an in-house translation team. Working closely with Computer Vision Engineers and managed by the CTO, this role will lead the development of an important part of Signapse’ translation technology.

Essential Requirements

  • At least 1 years experience with LLMs, both closed- and open-source, and fine-tuning of proprietary datasets.

  • At least 2 years experience using NLP technologies in a commercial environment

  • At least 2 years experience with Python in a commercial environment

  • Experience with deploying LLM solutions in a real-world application, with both infrastructure and scaling knowledge

  • Unit tests, Git, Docker, AWS knowledge

Desirable Requirements

  • A Computer Science or other science-based degree background

  • Experience with Neural Machine Translation in a low-resource language

  • Research experience such as published academic work or open-source contributions

  • An interest in the latest LLM technology and a willingness to explore the research landscape

  • Desire to build ground-breaking NLP applications that benefit a marginalised community

  • Understanding of the Deaf community or sign language

Example Responsibilities

Design and build NLP solutions using LLMs for translation between English text and written Sign Language sequence. You will do this by: 


  • Exploring the landscape of closed- and open-source LLMs

  • Prompt engineering LLMs for the task of Sign Language Translation

  • Fine-tuning an LLM on our proprietary dataset

  • Working with the in-house translation team to build the best dataset for our use case

This is a full-time position, with normal virtual office hours of 9am to 6pm, although flexibility is offered to suit reasonable personal circumstances. What matters most to us is strong collaboration, meeting agreed milestones and the delivery of high quality work.
