German Sign Language (DGS)

German Sign Language (DGS) is a complete and independent language with its own grammar and structure. It is fundamentally different from spoken German and is not a signed form of German. DGS is closely connected to the history and culture of the German Deaf community.

DGS is expressed visually and spatially. Manual and non-manual elements work together, including handshape, hand orientation, location and movement, as well as facial expression, mouthing, mouth gestures, head and body posture, eye gaze and eye movement. Signing space is also used grammatically and to carry meaning.
‍
Since 2002, German Sign Language has been legally recognised as an independent language under the Disability Equality Act (BGG). When dealing with federal authorities, there are legally regulated options for using DGS to communicate.
